Founded in 2015 by Daniel Erdmann, the trio Velvet Revolution has a unique musical narrative style and sound. The French violinist Théo Ceccaldi is a virtuoso of unexpected sonic development. English vibraphonist Jim Hart masterfully combines soaring moments with the utmost percussive precision. And Daniel Erdmann – born in Wolfsburg, having made his name in Berlin and now firmly rooted in France for over 20 years – unfolds unexpected depths of impact with his subversively beautiful tone.
The similarity in name between his trio and the 1960s cult band ‘Velvet Underground’ from New York inspired Daniel Erdmann to reinterpret some of Lou Reed’s iconic songs – originally sung by Nico – in the style of his ‘velvet revolution’. He does so with the Serbian-born singer and actress Jelena Kuljić, who has been enriching the German jazz scene since 2003. With her expressive voice and formidable stage presence, she opens up new creative horizons for this unusual trio, who now also set her lyrics to music or entrust her with their music, to which she writes lyrics about love and life – incisive and subtle.
